Dapeng Fortress, built initially in the year of 1394, was an important military fortress of costal defense during Ming and Qing dynasties. It is where the name of Pengcheng, another name of Shenzhen, comes from. As about a dozen of generals in Ming and Qing dynasties were from Dapeng Fortress, the place is also called “general village.”

Dapeng Fortress covers 100,000 square meters. It has not only grand ancient city gates, characteristic dwellings and alleys, but also imposing General Houses. Dapeng Fortress is China’s best preserved fortress of coastal defense during Ming and Qing dynasties and an important study subject of Ming dynasty’s military system of fortress. General Lai En Jue from Dapeng Fortress won the first battle in Opium War. Characteristic culture, which is an important part of Lingnan culture, has been preserved in Dapeng Fortress, and the language of the place is unique.

In 1995, Dapeng Fortress was designated to become the “base of Shenzhen’s patriotic education.” On June 25, 2001, it was awarded the title of “national key cultural protection site” by the State Council. On October 8, 2003, Pengcheng village, where Dapeng Fortress is located, got the name “China’s historical and cultural old village.” On June 28, 2004, Dapeng Fortress was given the first place in “Shenzhen’s eight tourist sites.”
